BIO

Edward Weiman began practicing law in 1997 after working in the entertainment industry for several years in production and production management.  As an attorney, Mr. Weiman has focused almost exclusively on the litigation and resolution of entertainment, intellectual property, and other complex business disputes.

 

Mr. Weiman is a former associate and partner of Los Angeles entertainment litigation boutique White O’Connor Fink & Brenner, later merged with Kelley, Drye & Warren; and a former partner of Wolf, Rifkin, Shapiro, Schulman & Rabkin.  In his time with those firms, Mr. Weiman represented nearly every major film and television studio, as well as independent production companies, distributors, artists, writers, agents, managers, and other entertainment industry professionals.

 

Mr. Weiman has published and spoken extensively on copyright, trademark, and First Amendment issues, presenting MCLE programs on these topics to most of the major entertainment and media companies, smaller independents, and other entertainment law firms.

  • Represented talent manager in litigation against award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer, arising out of unpaid commissions in connection with blockbuster motion pictures, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Represented multiple Grammy and Platinum Award-winning rock band in partnership litigation with departed member, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Represented producer in Writers Guild arbitration arising out alleged unpaid writer’s fees, securing an award in producer’s favor.
  • Represented Platinum Award-winning musician in successful application for temporary, and permanent, civil harassment restraining orders.
  • Represented talent manager in litigation against award-winning actor, arising out of unpaid commissions, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Defended music producer in copyright litigation arising out of the production of a track for multiple Gold Award-winning artist, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Represented entertainment museum operators in successful application for temporary, and permanent, civil harassment restraining orders.
  • Represented production company in connection with claims against international distribution company for copyright and trademark infringement, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Defended music producer in copyright litigation arising out of the production of a track for award-winning musician, resulting in confidential settlement.
  • Represented entertainment company in four-month arbitration, successfully defending against claims for breach of contract, fraud, copyright infringement, and breach of fiduciary duty, arising out of master license agreement for entertainment property.

  • Represented television network and multiple Grammy and Emmy Award-winning performer in copyright infringement action arising out of motion picture, successfully defending against application for temporary restraining order and motion for preliminary injunction, resulting in dismissal of the action.
  • Represented computer manufacturer in jury trial of breach of contract action, arising out of manufacturing agreement, securing judgment in excess of $5 million.

  • Represented computer manufacturer in bench trial of breach of contract action, arising out of purchase agreement, securing judgment in excess of $2 million.

Appeals

Silverlake Park, LLC v. First Capital Real Estate Investment, LLC, et al., Case No. B307446 (Cal. App. 2022)

Represented real estate investment firm against multiple defendants in investment fraud action resulting in stipulated and default judgments, including findings of alter ego liability at trial, in excess of $37 million.  Affirmed.

Gerald V. Hollingsworth v. Jimmy Loh and Su Liu CPAs, APC, et al., Case No. B275749 (Cal. App. 2017)

Represented defendants in action for malicious prosecution arising out of underlying claim for defamation, securing dismissal on anti-SLAPP motion.  Affirmed.

Neil Portman v. New Line Cinema Corp., Case No. B233669 (Cal. App. 2011)

Represented New Line in idea submission action concerning the motion picture “Wedding Crashers,” securing dismissal on demurrer.  Affirmed.

Rex Reginald v. New Line Cinema Corp., United Talent Agency, Inc., and Robert Shaye, Case No. B190025 (Cal. App. 2008)

Represented New Line and Robert Shaye in idea submission action concerning the motion picture “Wedding Crashers,” securing dismissal on summary judgment.  Affirmed.

David H. Verdiner v. Scottrade, Inc., Case No. 06-56655 (9th Cir. 2008)

Represented Scottrade in securities class action alleging false advertising and unfair business practices regarding the assessment of online broker fees, successfully moving to dismiss action.  Affirmed.

Maureen Marder v. Jennifer Lopez, Sony Music Entm’t, Inc. and Paramount Pictures Corp., 450 F.3d 445 (9th Cir. 2006)

Represented Paramount Pictures in copyright infringement and copyright co-ownership action concerning the motion picture “Flashdance,” successfully moving to dismiss action.  Affirmed.

Time Warner Entm’t Co., L.P. v. Cont’l Cas. Co., 72 F. App’x 586 (9th Cir. 2003)

Represented Time Warner in insurance bad faith action, successfully moving for summary judgment, resulting in $2.7 million judgment against Continental Casualty for breach of duty to defend Time Warner in litigation brought by Francis Ford Coppola.  Affirmed.
